I just recently traded in my 2000 Toyota Tundra limited and got $8200 trade for it. The vehicle was in mint shape with only 74,000 miles on it. I have pictures etc...I just traded it for a 2009 corolla S. the frame was so rotted I didn't have a choice in trading it in. It was just falling off in clumps of rust. The brake lines and brakes worried me to much and was a safety concern. The recall should have been when the Tacoma had their recall. If it wasn't for the rust id still have that truck. Jeff popp worcester MA now I have a 200 dollar more car payment I wish I didn't have to have. It would be nice to get re embursed for the difference of this reason of getting rid of my Tundra. Thank U.

I noticed the spare tire dangling underneath the vehicle. When I lowered the tire I noticed that the entire cross brace had rusted out and left the spare tire held by a thin rusted piece of metal. I removed the tire and keep it in the back of the truck. If that tire broke away while driving at 65 miles an hour, it could easily have killed someone.

Excessive rust on the frame of my Toyota Tundra has led to me having to replace my calipers on my front brakes, a corroded parking brake and both front tie rods. After seeing the report on my local news, I am very concerned about the safety of myself and my family.

Tundra

  • 76,000 miles
I own a year 2000 Toyota Tundra, which I purchased as a new vehicle. The truck has approximately 81,000 miles on it and has been garaged for the entire time that I have owned it. The underside of the vehicle has shown extreme rusting, especially the brake system which has failed twice due to corrosion. During the most recent brake failure I could not stop the vehicle while descending a hill and downshifted the transmission to slow down. Additional rust problems have included replacement of all front and rear brake lines, including the rear proportioning valve. The front rotor caliper pins have also seized due to rust. The emergency brake seized due to rust and was not operational. Both sway bar links and bushings failed due to rust. The heat shields around the muffler and catalytic converter rusted off the Tundra and may have posed significant safety hazards to drivers traveling behind me on the highway. These corrosion problems were reported to Toyota and the truck was inspected by a district service representative for frame rusting only (summer 2009). The other problems with the braking system, etc. Were completely ignored, even though I brought this to the service rep's attention. In addition, the district manager was contacted several months ago and has not addressed my concerns. All the above problems above were repaired at the local Toyota dealer, whose mechanics commented that the underside of the truck was severely corroded. Also, the repairs are documented in my vehicle's service history.

I have a 2000 Toyota Tundra with severe frame rusting. My local mechanic has discovered a through hole in the left frame rail and a dangerously thin left rear spring shackle support. I am concerned the frame could fail while driving and that the vehicle will not pass the state safety inspection.

The contact owns a 2000 Toyota Tundra. In June of 2004, he noticed corrosion bubbling under the paint on the frame; there were quarter inch lumps on the paint. His mechanic speculated that the corrosion was premature for the vehicle's age in 2004. He then recommended that the vehicle be oiled. The vehicle has been oiled since 2005. During the last oiling he was advised that the cross brace that holds the spare tire had corrosion, and the spare tire was missing. The manufacturer nor the dealer was contacted. The current mileage was approximately 154,000. The failure mileage was 50,000. Consumer is adding pictures. 10/26/09. Updated 10/26/09 the consumer sent in pictures of the frame. Updated 10/28/09

I own a 2000 Toyota Tundra pick-up that has been maintained correctly by the Toyota dealership. It has a severe rust problem underneath the truck on the frame and supporting parts. The body of the truck is in excellent condition. I have 89,000 miles on it and wanted to keep it for several more years. I am afraid I have a safety issue and am afraid to take the truck on the highway. I just recently put $2,000 into this at the dealer and nothing was said abut the rust. I cannot get Toyota to address this. I want to know how to proceed...I need a vehicle to get to work and cant afford a new one without some help. Please help me get this resolved.

Tundra

  • 71,674 miles
I recently noticed extensive frame rust on my Toyota Tundra. On September 28, 2009, I took it to the Toyota dealer for a frame inspection. The inspection found significant rust and as a result of the inspection, the dealer determined that the vehicle is unsafe to drive. The dealer said there was nothing they could do about it since there had been no recall program or other action by Toyota. The dealer did tell me that Toyota did establish a program for the Tacoma. In fact, the dealer used a worksheet form the Tacoma program to note the location and extent of corrosion. On September 29, 2009, I called Toyota customer service about the problem but they did not offer any relief or remedy. I was given a case number of 0909141286 and told that a case manager would call me. On September 30, 2009, a Toyota case manager called me but said at this time there was nothing they could do. I was told that Toyota had received similar complaints from other owners and was investigating the issue. I was told that there was nothing in place to assist me with my problem, even though a dealer had already inspected my vehicle and declared that it was unsafe to drive due to the rust problem. I was told that there is no date by which the Toyota investigation will be completed and there was nothing they can do for me in the meantime. I need my truck for transportation now. I am requesting the assistance of the NHTSA to compel Toyota to provide a remedy to me for this safety defect in the vehicle.

Toyota 2000 Tundra--extensive rust on the entire frame. Large thick flakes of rust have been falling off for two years. Significant rust-through perforation in frame. Clearly undermines structural integrity of the frame of the truck. It has had the underbody washed weekly since it was new. It has 72000 original one-owner miles. I don't feel safe driving this car because in the event of an impact the frame would crumble. Currently there are holes in the frame that you could stick several fingers through.

I have a 2000 Toyota Tundra SR5 access cab 4WD pick up that has 131,000 miles. Failed the state safety inspection due to a rusted out crossmember in the rear of the vehicle. It was also pointed out to me the poor condition of the frame in many other areas. It is obvious Toyota has a serious safety issue on their hands with frame rot. The Tacoma's proved that. Why aren't they including these Tundra's with the same issues? I do have a small child that rides in the vehicle so I'm very concerned.
