My used 2012 "Toyota certified" 4WD Tacoma Truck (bought with 75,000 miles) had both leafsprings crack at the same time at 86,400 miles. Previously my 2008 Tacoma truck (traded in for the 2012 model year) was covered under the suspension recall, and had the leafsprings replaced at no cost to me. I took my current 2012 Tacoma to the dealership, and they said the recall only covered until 2011 model years. The steel was clearly FAULTY STEEL, as both leafsprings cracked at the same time.
I called Toyota's national Customer Service line, but they said my VIN # was not covered, and that they'd include it in their database of future complaints. The dealership said they'd need $3,500 for parts and labor to fix the problem. I didn't have $3,500 to spend, so I hunted around for a better deal and obtained leafsprings and U-bolts from national auto parts franchise, NAPA Auto Parts, for $710. A local mechanic then charged me $370 to install the new parts. In the meantime, I've reported this to the National Highway Traffic's database of complaints, and will attempt to recover my $1,100 in costs in Small Claims Court.
Great truck but this vibration issue is causing a concern. It feels like when you go over metal bars on roads (to prevent animals from crossing over to the other side ). It only does it @ certain speeds.not all the time.
