The second major problem I have had and no recall on this, though it has been a recall issue for the Tundra and the Sequoia. Sunday night so tomorrow I get to spend the day calling to see what I have to do to get this fixed. My 3rd Toyota and I have always loved Toyota, but am beginning to think I may need to rethink my vehicle choice after this.
THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT IT WOULD COST $ 1700 DOLLARS TO FIX AND THAT IT WASN'T UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE IT WAS AN EMISSIONS PROBLEM NOT DRIVE TRAIN. THEY ALSO CHARGED ME $66.00 TO TELL ME THAT. SO I HAVE TO REPLACE THE AIR INJECTION PUMP, AIR INJECTION VALVES AND THE AIR INJECTION SWITCH VALVES. AM I GOING TO HAVE TO REPLACE THEM EVERY 29,000 MILES BECAUSE THAT'S ALL THE MILES I HAVE ON THE TRUCK.
I'm having the same problem as a lot of people with my 2012 Tacoma with about 72,000 miles. I have seen the exact same problems: check engine and TRAC OFF lights illuminate, truck goes into limp mode (20-45 MPH), and the dreaded P2440 and P2442 diagnostic codes. I investigated online and discovered Toyota does not cover this problem under any warranty for the Tacoma, but they fully cover Tundras and possibly Sequoias up to 150,000 miles for the EXACT same problem! Toyota says that they are not covering Tacomas because the problem is not frequent enough. So much for customer service and standing behind one's product. I went to the dealership, telling them all of the information I had gathered and that I was not going to pay to have it repaired. The dealership was very understanding, saying they would call Toyota corporate on my behalf. I got a call back from the dealership (the same day I paid off my truck), and I was informed that Toyota would not cover ANY of the costs. I said, "Do you expect me to spend $2,400 for a repair that is clearly a design flaw, have you use the same type of flawed parts to 'repair' my truck, and I'm supposed to believe that this won't happen again?" Not to mention I, like most people, do not have that much money to throw around. Toyota is really building a reputation of selling vehicles with excellent brand recognition and history of reliability, only to shirk their responsibilities to their customers when problems arise. I love my Tacoma. I wish I could drive it forever. I will have it repaired when I save up enough money. Then I will sell it, and cease to purchase Toyota products until they have proven to me that they have demonstrated a true change in customer care and product responsibility. I kinda breaks my heart, but you've got to stand your ground!
Same as others - Car CEL and Trac Off lights come on and engine put into limp mode. Won't accelerate and has an issue with the secondary air injection system.
Have seen so many others have this issue and it costs them $2500 to fix. This needs to be a recall from Toyota.
Bought truck new - had ALL recommended maintenance done at dealership. Now suddenly we get a $1968.29 repair bill for a vehicle that has never been off road, never been abused, and primarily used for commuter.
Toyota has stood behind other models like the Sequoia and the Tundra with recalls and reimbursements for same problem - why not the Tacoma!
A new vehicle with a proven record of all maintenance should not have a $2000.00 failure at 64,000 miles!!!
