I purchased a 2011 Tacoma Access Cab 4X4 with Off Road Package. Standard Tacomas include several "STAR Safety Features". One in paricular is the TRAC, which assists in 2WD or 4WD High and is automatically on. This assists in staying on track whie driving on slippery, wet or icy road conditions. However, the window sticker for our new vehicle states under the Off Road Package options the following "VSC & ATRAC in place of standard VSC + TRAC".
According to the vehicles operation manual, ATRAC only operates in 4WD Low and only when physically activated by pressing on the ATRAC button. We mainly will be driving our new Tacoma in town. We have lengthy Winter months with significant snow and icy conditions, most of the season. One of the main reasons we puchased the Tacoma was due to the advertised STAR Safety Features, which again are automatically activated when the vehicle is turned on. It would be unfortunate to loose the important TRAC safety feature when in 2WD or 4WD High, which would be all of our useage.
I contacted Toyota Customer Care to make an inquiry. I explained that I needed to know if our new Tacoma still has the TRAC feature, although the window sticker states it has been replaced my the ATRAC (4WD Low Only) feature. I explained that we would probably never use 4WD Low around town, so the TRAC Safety Feature is what is most important. After two seperate contacts to Toyota Customer Care, we found that they do not have a clue concerning the vehicles in which they design and sell to consumers. I only got as far as being pointed to the manual. I explained that I clearly understand the two systems and again need to know, according to our vehicle id number, if the "ATRAC replaced TRAC" is only a typo or if by upgrading to the Off Road Package, we lost one of the most important safety features for our vehicles useage.
Toyota Customer Care has absolutely no knowledge and on both occasions were frankly rude to us. I was handed off several times to the next person "who could answer my question". Each hand off, seemed like they were not the person to talk to. One person was so rude to me that I had to go as far as suggesting two things for her: Charm School and a class in providing Customer Service. This person actually hung up on me after I had had enough of her extremely poor attitude. If you purchase a Toyota, make certain that you have zero expectations of Toyota to stand behind their products, especially when it comes to public/consumer safety. I will also be contacting the Federal Highway Safety to file a formal complaint against Toyota Motor Corporation.
