radio turns off and on at will

When I first bought the truck, I drove it very little. Much of the time the radio wasn't even on and when it was, I noticed the radio would occasionally die out and come back on. I thought it was a reception problem and didn't really pay any attention to it. That went on for a few years until I began driving it a little more often with the radio turned on. I noticed more and more that when I turned the radio on, it would stay on for awhile and then just die out.

The radio appeared to be losing power as the screen would go blank. I would push the on button again and the radio began working. I might stay on and no more trouble for that trip, or I might have to repeat the action several times during the trip. Yesterday when I was driving, I had the radio on and it worked for about 2 minutes and then went off. I pushed the on button and it worked for about two minutes and went off. I repeated this action the rest of the way home and the radio kept shutting off about two minutes after I had turned it on again. I checked on the internet and it appears as if Toyota owners have had an unusually high number of vehicles that have had the same problem of power failure with their radios. I mentioned this to Toyota dealership one time about two years ago and the service agent said he knew nothing of a history of similar problems with Toyota vehicles. From what I found on the internet, I believe that Toyota should have a recall to repair the defectives radios and wiring harness. I have noticed that sunlight and the heat generated in a parked vehicle does appear to augment the problem. On days that I have the vehicle garaged and cool, the radio works better, but if I park in the sun, the radio barely works without turning off and on as described. It is highly possible that the hear causes something to expand in the dash and causes some wiring connection to break connection, but it becomes very exasperating. I guess I should have taken the truck back to the dealership right after I bought it, but I really wasn't aware of the problem for several years. I would think that since so many owners of Toyota vehicles from 2009 to 2012 have had the same or similar problem with their radios that Toyota would issue a RECALL AND FIX THE PROBLEM. Can you help?

Tacoma 4 cyl

  • Manual transmission
  • 25,000 miles

Radio started turning itself off at around 25k miles, perhaps once a week or so. All I had to do was hit the power button and it would come back on. Figured it might be a loose power wire and I;d get to it when I had time. A month later it started doing it more frequently. It's now at the point where it's doing it four or five times on my 25min. drive to work. I now get some weird symbols on the radio display like "FM< followed by a bunch of solid black box characters" or just the block characters, so I had my doubts about loose wiring. Looking back at the 2009 Tacoma, the same problem has been reported about 20 times. Will head to the dealer and see what they say.
