This truck is only 5 years old and 120,000 miles. I bought a Toyota because of their reputation for reliability and low maintenance. In 5 years I have put over $5000 in repairs. I will never buy a Toyota again.

Clutch slips while driving at normal speeds. When going uphill, you have to downshift several times. This truck has never been used off road or abused in any way. It has only been driven by experienced manual shift drivers. We have had many Toyotas over the years and never had any problems until this one!

Bought the truck new, and drove it gently. Never towed a trailer, never plowed snow, never went off-road, never loaned it out, loaded it down or climbed mountains. I’ve driven manual all my 40+ years of driving. I thought I noticed it starting to slip at about 12K miles, but dismissed it since it seemed so unlikely. Also, it was winter and hard to diagnose on slippery pavement. By 13K miles it was slipping badly in 4th and 5th gear. Why? I’m mystified. I know all the usual explanations--mainly poor driving, but I also know that I’ve driven it well. The lack of excessive tire wear supports what I’m saying. I have the old disc and pressure plate, and there’s nothing there to suggest hard use. I’m at a loss to understand why this happened (also at a loss of $1500 to fix it).

Tacoma SE 2.7L

  • Manual transmission
  • 49,710 miles

The clutch plate bearing is squeaking at 80,000 km. Dealership will probably want to replace the bearing which is not covered by the 100,000 km powertrain waranty. Bumper to bumper warrant expired at 60,000km.

Brand new truck, clutch started slipping at 5000 miles, took into dealer at 15,000 miles Selling dealer, James Toyota, Flemington, NJ refused to fix the problem under warranty unless I first authorized $1000 for the repair. Went to a different dealer who fixed the problem under warranty.
