The car suddenly accelerated at a high speed without me pressing the accelerator. I had to press on the brakes very hard and when it finally slowed down, I shifted to low gear and drove it slowly to the garage.

I had just pulled my truck into my friend's driveway. Came to a complete stop. Never took my foot off the brake. Went to shift the transmission from Drive to Park. All of a sudden the engine rev'd up, the rear tires started to spin; I'm standing on brake to keep from advanced forward...doesn't help, as my truck drives through my friends garage door. Fortunately there was no other car inside the garage. It all happened very quickly and surprisingly. I finally got my vehicle to stop by putting it into Park and taking my foot off the brake.

I just pickup up my daughter from her school with my other daughter also in the truck. The school is on a hill which leads to a red light at a major road and as we started down the hill in a line of other vehicles, the truck accelerated while my foot was on the brake. So much so that as I pushed the brake you could hear and feel the anti-lock system working but the truck still went forward towards an on-coming school bus! We were frightened stiffed! I stopped the truck finally and pulled over to try to figure out what just happened. At first I figured it was the anti-lock braking system might have went on as I applied the brake or maybe some sand on the road caused the anti-locks to go on but the road was clear, dry and this would explain the accelerated thrust forward. I dropped off the kids and went to Tarbox Toyota and asked them to look at the truck. I inquired about this and to check if there was any reported problems with the anti-lock brakes. But now I realize what was happening is not the anti-lock brakes but a sudden-acceleration problem with another system on my truck. I'm taking it back there tomorrow. This is a scary situation to ever experience. I've owned 1997 Tacoma before this one and I never had any problems with it what so ever. I loved it! But this 2006 with all the new computer systems and complicated components sucks-eggs! Go back to making simpler trucks and cars that are reliable and fun to own - Toyota! You can have this one back!

THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED TWO SPONTANEOUS AND UNCONTROLLED ACCELERATIONS WITHIN ABOUT TWO HOURS. THE FIRST WAS ON THE HIGHWAY. I TURNED INTO A PULLOUT TO ALLOW A FASTER CAR TO PASS ON A SNOW-SLICKED ROAD. WHILE TURNING BACK TOWARD THE HIGHWAY AT SLOW SPEED, ABOUT 5 MPH, TAPPING ON MY BRAKE PEDAL, THE CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AND I WAS FORCED TO STAND ON THE BRAKES TO KEEP IT FROM RUNNING AWAY. BECAUSE OF THE ANTI-SKID BRAKES ENGAGING, THE CAR STILL MADE IT 3-4 FEET INTO THE TRAFFIC LANE BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO STOP. THE SECOND INCIDENT OCCURRED ABOUT AN HOUR LATER WHEN I ARRIVED HOME. I WAS BACKING THE TRUCK DOWN A CURVED, GRAVEL DRIVEWAY TOWARD A TUCK-UNDER GARAGE. THE TOTAL DISTANCE TO BE TRAVELED WAS ABOUT 30 FEET. EASING DOWN IN THE TURN, I HAD TRAVELED ABOUT 20 FEET WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE (IDLING POWER WAS ALL THAT WAS NEEDED TO BACK DOWN AT 1-2 MPH; NO GAS WAS APPLIED). THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY LURCHED BACKWARDS. AGAIN, I HAD TO STAND ON THE BRAKES WHILE THE ENGINE REVVED AND THE REAR TIRES SPUN AND THREW GRAVEL, DIGGING 3-4 INCHES DEEP INTO THE GRAVEL SURFACE, BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO TURN OFF THE ENGINE. THE FOLLOWING MONDAY, I TOOK THE TRUCK TO MY TOYOTA DEALER. THEY WERE UNABLE TO FIND ANY DEFECT OR RECREATE THE PROBLEM.
