To summarize, the truck is always in drive, even if the shifter is in other positions. Park will hold the vehicle without movement but I can tell the trans is still in gear. The moment I start the truck I can hear it go into drive, even when the shift lever is in park.
As I accelerate I can get up to about 25-30 and at that point it slams down to 1st gear, revving the engine up to 5,000 Rpm's then as I slow down to stop at a light there is a thud around 3-5Mph, and it sounds like its forcing itself back to 1st gear.
2 repair shops say they think the first gear clutch bands have welded/fused together requiring a full rebuild. AAMCO says 2200$ and another local shop says 2800$ to rebuild.
