What happened?
I was driving on I95 between North and South Carolina with the windows up and the sunroof closed as it is really cold outside right now. I heard what sounded like a shotgun going off in the car and my sunroof went flying up into the air. I looked in my rear view mirror as I watched it almost go through a truck's windshield before it caught wind and shot straight down into the road and exploded into pieces. The sunroof glass, half the assembly and even the door that closes under the sunroof all through the now large hole in the top of my car.
How I tried to get it resolved with Toyota.
Called the dealership that I purchased the car from and they told me that I would have to speak with Toyota Corporate so I did. After talking to Corporate all I got was "sorry, it's not covered under warranty" and then after asking to speak with a supervisor I got "Sorry this is Toyota's final decision".
My Thoughts.
Well frankly this is not a warranty item in my mind as how many times has anyone seen a sunroof shoot off of a car. I understand that there is rust that can now be seen that the roof is gone with part of the actual mechanism but that would be an issue with the seal that I am not having anywhere else on the car. The car looks brand new and is taken care of and you will not find a spot of rust anywhere else. Also for those wondering there is no water damage to the inside of the cars roof as you would expect due to the rust you can see, nor was there ever an indication that water could be getting in.
