We bought the vehicle new in March of last year. After a few months, I noticed that the gas mileage wasn't was it should be, and I began calculating it at each fill-up. It was pretty consistent at 11-12mpg, (advertised mpg is 18 city). In September, I complained to the dealership and the Service Manager said to wait until the first scheduled service at 5K miles. I told him we had operated it for 2.5K miles, with it costing us approximately twice what it should, and I had NO intention of continuing that. I wanted the problem fixed as soon as possible. He then said to bring it in and they would look at the computer settings.
When I brought it in, he pushed the "Eco mode" button and said that I would see the mpg rise. He refused to look at it in more detail without "mileage logs." I said I had calculated the mileage for 6-10 fill-ups now, and it had been consistently bad. He still wouldn't look at it without "mileage logs." So now, I have the figures for the last 3 months, and I called the dealership again. The Service Manager first tried to use the "no gas mileage logs" excuse. I told him that I had them. He then tried to blame it on "winter driving." I told him that the poor gas mileage had continued through the spring, summer and fall months. He then told me that I "couldn't expect the vehicle to perform efficiently until 20-40 thousand miles," because "computers kick in at that point." Finally, he grudgingly gave me an appointment for this Monday. I'll bet he'll think up a new excuse by then.
Is this a wide-spread problem, or are we the only ones with what seems to be a lemon?
The dealership's name is Town Toyota. They are in Wenatchee Washington.
