My wife went outside this morning and saw what you see in the pictures. The rear glass was shattered and glass was on the outside indicating that the window had possibly been pushed outwards. There was only a little bit of glass on the inside. I parked the car outside last night and it was normal temperatures for Texas. The rear of the car was less than a foot from our garage. The damage is not consistent with vandalism and there are no glass pieces inside the car that would suggest a bat or anything else.
I called Toyota (national number) to inquire about warranty coverage for the glass repair and was told to bring it to the dealer so that they could make a determination on the warranty work. Our insurance company said the same thing since the car is barely a year old (14K miles).
We brought the car to Texas Toyota of Grapevine which turned out to be a waste (other than the scheduled oil change). They refused to accept that it could possibly be a manufacturers defect and since they "had never seen this before so it won't be covered under the warranty." They would not look at the pictures I provided and instead decided that there was no way that they could prove it was a defect. They did not even consider that it could be a bad defroster unit (other reports on this site indicated that possibility) or the rear door frame was out of alignment or that there was a defect with the manufacturing of the window itself. No one from management came and asked us what happened or offered to have us walk through what we found.
After the oil change was complete, the car was delivered back to us with the glass still in the vehicle and the rear window not covered. Texas Toyota of Grapevine website states that all service comes with "complimentary car wash and interior vacuum." I can understand not washing but the interior vacuum is unacceptable. As far as we are concerned, they let us leave the facility with an unsafe vehicle with no regard for our safety or the safety of other drivers.
They advertise "superior customer service". This is not what they offered. Even though they refused to honor the manufacturers warranty, I feel that a company with "superior customer service" should have provided a list of glass repair locations, vacuumed the glass, and covered the rear window with plastic. None of this was provided and all they said was "contact your insurance company".
This is going to cost us over $500 to get repaired and we do not feel that this is a cost that we should have to incur.
On a positive note - Safelite Auto Glass vacuumed the car out and wrapped the back in plastic to give it some protection until it can be fixed on Monday. They care more about the car and our safety than Toyota does.
