I wasn't shocked, because as soon as I got to work on the morning the van was acting oddly, I googled the symptoms. It was lurching into gear from a stop and in reverse. I decided to go straight to the dealer on my way home after reading about explosions and seizures....and it had gotten worse. There was a grinding noise from under the hood.
Turns out it was indeed the transmission...luckily my extended warranty covered the whole thing including the rental. I have a re-manufactured transmission... which is not a bad thing.
It’s a pretty awful thing to happen and especially in a Toyota which I have come to rely on... Because I was covered, and was able to do some research, I’m not as angry as the others---this could happen to a any car---but Toyota would do well to jump on problems this severe in cars this new to avoid damage to its reputation and to restore faith in their customers. It’s a stupid move not to. They should have a 100K power train warranty...if this is as rare as they say.
