The wife had complained about a frequent, but not continuous, rattle from the front end of the card while driving. A couple of days later, while pulling to a stop at a rest area, she heard the rattle start, then stop, followed by a definitive thunk of heavy metal falling down. She found what turned out to be the bottom end of the suspension coil spring lying on the road by her front left tire. The spring had fractured right at the last coil, and must have been held captive in the bottom coil tray until that time.

The dealer, and a couple of other mechanics advised me that this was a common problem on that year for Siennas.

I shudder to think what might have happened had the coil spring fractured half-way up the spring, at highway speeds with our kids in the car.

This, coupled with another, obviously common problem with the Toyota Sienna (related to the power steering rack steering fluid leak) which cost me another $600 at the same time, has me wondering why there has been no recall on this model year.

I'm certainly not going to consider Toyota for my, or my kids' future cars unless Toyota makes me whole on the expenses.

Sienna LE 3.5L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 38,000 miles

As I was driving on the expressway I heard a loud noise like something had fallen off the vehicle. Since it was dark I couldn't figure out what it was. I reduced speed and continued driving as the vehicle seemed to be running ok otherwise. The next day I took the vehicle to the dealer and had them look at it and they could not immediately figure out what was wrong but they found out later that there was a broken suspension spring. The suspension spring had broken and it cost $900 (including alignment job) to fix at the dealership.

noise from suspension noise from suspension

I noticed a noise in the right front of my Sienna when going over not as smooth roads. Eventually big clunk noise and this pice of coil flew out into the road. Dealer has no idea why this happened. Claims it has not been a problem with other Sienna's but I see that it has on this website. Could have been very dangerous if had gone into the tire and punctured it. The piece looks partially rusted to me. When I first brought it in the guy suggested since it was no longer making noise that we drive it around for another day and see if there is more noise. I did not feel comfortable with that suggestion since a big piece of my car had just broken off. So I insisted they look at it (which they charged me $69 for) and then all of a sudden thy were like yes this should be replaced immediately and you shouldn't be driving it- not safe- The $885 only replaced the coils on right ride front and back. No shock or strut replacement.
