The VCS or vehicle control system in my Toyota Sequoia is causing misfires in about half of the eight cylinders in this vehicle. I’ve been a Toyota lover for a long time, but I have to say that now I don’t believe I’ll ever buy another Toyota. This problem is almost impossible to find and it’s almost impossible to find someone to fix it.

I took it into the local Toyota dealership here in Atlanta. Spent $3000 didn’t fix it. Had to take it back. They kept it for a few days and again did not fix it. They said it was fixed, but it wasn’t. I wasted countless hours talking to assistant managers and service managers all the way through general managers. Even called the corporate office, all of it was a waste of time. Corporate office was not concerned about making me happy, even though I told them that I was a loyal Toyota driver and had been for years. They need to just go back to the simple carburetor rotor cap ignition systems engines that made them loved by so many people.

Sequoia SR5 V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 155,000 miles

Our 2005 sequoia dash lights came on, all the off road or snow trac.... which i have never used. After that the vehicle has no acceleration over 40 mph, rpms go up but increase in speed. Have had close incidents in the freeway with the loss of power had to pull over and find the closer exit. This issue has been a pain in the.......My total faith on toyota has diminished. I can understand if it was not so common but people are popping up everywhere with the same problem. Its only fair for toyota to fix this problem. Very dangerous for the family!!!!!!!

Sequoia SR-5 4.7L V8

While driving back home on a Sunday, 35 miles from home. The VSC off, VSC Trac and check engine light all come on. Big lost of power on a hill, does OK down the hill. We made it home OK and took to dealer the next day. They replaced the Air Pump Assemblies, $1807.33. Dealer stated "you are ready to go". Drove 7-8 miles, engine sputterling, returned to dealer. This time, no codes showed up. They added some fuel additive but found NO PROBLEMS. Picked up, drove 175 miles, engine made clicking noise, returned to dealer. They removed object that had "closed" one spark plug up. Replaced that spark plug at no charge to me. I asked should I expect any other problems with other "objects in the cylinders"? Was told they didn't know. Drove another 200 miles or so. This time 6 miles from dealer, I thought the engine was coming out. Should have had it towed in. May should have had it towed in the other two times?? Made it to dealer, this time $3115.68. Replaced both heads, manifold assy, water pump, etc. Toyota did give me $1000.00 off and the dealer gave me about $1200.00 off. I have total of $3923.01 in the repair. Seems the original "Air Pump Assemblies" should have been on a "recall" list. These parts that must have broken off and got down in the engine were defective. The vehicle runs fine now other than a "clicking" noise. Have 12 months or 12K mile warranty on the work they did. I only drive this vehicle about 7K per year.

Sequoia ES V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 81,000 miles

The check engine light first went on in Sept 2010. I was told that with the vsc track and one other light that came on together, the codes (P1442 and P1444, I believe) meant air intake valve was sticking and not regulating the amount of air into the carburetor correctly. Repair costs were going to top $800. I was also told that in the short run it wouldn't impact operation but it could gum up the catalytic converter over time, which would be a very expensive replacement. The problem persisted, but the lights would go off for months at a time. Fast forward to 2014, when for the last months of the year, the lights were off.

On 02.04.2015, they came back on. On 02.06.2015, the car had significant problems accelerating, to the point where I wouldn't take it on the freeway. It now has over 155,000 miles on it, with no other engine issues. It has regular oil changes and other scheduled maintenance. In the past several years, I researched this and other problems I had (broken gate opener, et al) and found many other Toyota owners with similar problems. This does not appear to be an isolated incident.

Sequoia Sport 4.2L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 8,400 miles

The "VSC OFF", "VSC TRAC" and "ENGINE CHECK" light all simultaneously came on with my vehicle. Our vehicle only has 8,000 miles on it. We brought the vehicle to a Toyota dealer here in Germany (I'm military stationed in Germany) and they informed us that a "canister" needs to be replaced... estimated cost about $900 (700 Euro dollars). Since our vehicle only has 8,000 miles, I called Toyota Customer Care center back in the states about this problem. They were of no help, other than to tell me that it's not covered by the basic 5-Year/50K Mile Warranty.

If you Google this problem... you'll see that there are LOTS (and I mean, "LOTS") of Toyota owners with this EXACT same problem! You would think that Toyota would have done something about this by now. I am very upset with Toyota right now, especially considering that my vehicle only has 8,000 miles on it. (I was deployed to Iraq and the vehicle sat in our garage here in Germany.)

This is odd because I'm normally a very loyal Toyota product customer.... we own two older model Toyotas, a 93 Camry and a 2001 Lexus R300, and have never had any problems with them. Anyway, our "newest" Toyota (2005 Sequoia) is letting us down, and the way that Toyota has responded to this problem is now beginning to make me wonder if I should stay loyal to Toyota in the future.
