Sequoia Limited 4.7L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 159,000 miles

A D V E R T I S E M E N T S

I have a 2002 Toyota Sequoia, and my brakes begin to engage on there on with my VSC light activating as if I am losing control of the vehicle. I can be driving straight on the road and it will activate and slight turns can make it occur. The car begins to brake itself and can be dangerous while operating. The grinding noise is extremely loud and makes me feel like I don't have full control of the vehicle.

Since taking it to the mechanic, they really didn't give me a way to fix it, so I removed my ABS fuse from the car, since clearly that is the system that is malfunctioning. It has now turned on my E-brake light, VCS Trac light, and ABS light but I would rather do that and have the lights on, than getting in an accident. I thought this occurrence was just a rare situation on my end, but now seeing how many others that have reported this issue shows that this is real problem, and it's putting others in danger. This issue needs to be taken seriously with the same measures that were made with the airbag recall for this vehicle. I believe Toyota needs to investigate more into this issue and release an official recall notice.

Here is a link to the problem that persists (this is not my video however the same thing happens to my vehicle):

As many other Sequoia owners have already stated, I've had issues with the VSC taking over and the brakes locking up my car while I'm driving down the highway... very dangerous and relatively common issue. I have no idea why the gov't didn't make Toyota issue a issue a recall but that should change soon. I'm already paying out of pocket to fix it, but for those who can't or do not wish to pay the money to fix it - it's unsafe and something should be done. If nothing else, you can unplug the master cylinder and that will disable the ABS and prevent this issue from occurring. Only issue is you lose you ABS VSC and VSC TRAC... but that seems a lot safer to me than having random braking on the highway.

Sequoia Limited 4X4 V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 97,231 miles

When the vehicle was fairly new (2-3 years), it experienced failure of the VSC/TRAC control, which the dealership fixed under the extended warranty. It's been about 13 years since that occurred, and even though the vehicle has less than 100K miles on it, the same problem is reoccurring, even right after first starting it in the morning - rapid beeping, VSC/TRAC/Skid lights turn on, grinding noise from the front brakes, and pulling to one side. After a short while, the skid light turns off, the grinding noise stops, but the VSC/TRAC lights stay off until the car cools down and is restarted.

Have had this 2002 Toyota Sequoia for 8 years now and have only recently, on 3 occasions, had this problem. The first was in the winter and hit a slick patch of ice and the vcs/trac lights came on and right front wheel ABS engaged causing us to swerve to the right until it corrected after a second or two. The last 2 occasions were on dry pavement, on a long curve to the left at approx. 40-50 mph. Both lights came on again simultaneously and the ABS on the right side kicked on pulling us to the right. No gravel, sand, or anything.

We have recently had the worn suspension replace (all ball joints, control arm bushings, struts, and linkage) and the 2 latest incidents happened posthaste. Not sure if its related but sure is coincidental? Anyway, looking for a fix but seems many are having the same issues w/ no fix in sight and Toyota not really owning up to a fault of some kind. Not willing to spend $$$$ when vehicle is only worth maybe $6200. Might be trading in soon as I do not want my wife to be in any kind of danger while driving a potentially hazardous vehicle.
