This happened at only 34k miles. Over warranty term by 4k miles so all expenses were paid out of pocket. Expected more from a Toyota, especially on a car with such low mileage.

coolant bypass valve

The maintenance light to bring to the Dealership keeps coming on can not clear even when cleared with a scanner and no codes come on. The dealership “ thinks “ it’s a bypass valve “ for the coolant to flow into the engine. I have now seen a lawsuit on this issue and Toyota refuses to fix it and the dealership has already seen more complaints and problems. The dealership keeps charging people and TOYOTA refusing do anything about it !! Toyota needs to address this issue immediately before the engines blow up as the weather gets hotter. I had a valve replacement already and spent 500 $ never had an issue prior with my other two or three rav4’s .. FYI not covered under warranty either work !!!

Update from Jul 17, 2024 Dealership does not have any information about it and still has no answers and states that they are willing to change out the hose and coolant system. Toyota dealership has been having issues with other rav4’s no one has been able to follow up will contact me when the car is ready still no codes showing up .

RAV4 LE 2.5L 4 cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 75,000 miles

Engine Maintenance Required message popped up. It is not possible to turn it off, you can only make it disappear for about 5 seconds. This makes your dash useless until it's fixed. I read on the internet that you can test whether or not it is your coolant bypass valve by turning the heat all the way up on the car and turning it off and then on again. If the message does not pop when turning on with heat all the way up, it is the bypass valve.

The dealership claimed that this did not mean that the coolant wasn't working, that all that was happening was that coolant was not being prevented from flowing when turning on the engine to heat it up to operating temperature, slightly increasing gas mileage and lowering emissions. I hope that this is true and that I am not damaging my engine.

Regardless, I would basically be paying $800 for the functionality of my dashboard to be restored. That is crazy.

There is a class action lawsuit out for this part. I spent a long time trying to pick a car that would shield me from this kind of situation. Really disappointed in Toyota for not recalling.
