My 2010 Rav4, 2.5, 4WD, 96k, bought 2014 from dealer w/48k, paid same amount as the original sticker price. NOW out-of-warranty w/ sudden onset of severe drive-ability issue. In traffic, at 25mph, car slipped into neutral, with no warning, No DTC / MIL Codes (engine light) and NO other symptom, 1 mile from home. I was towed home. The A/T fluid level and color checked normal. This is same U140F transmission for 2001-2012 that was replaced by owners supposedly failed tho the ECM controls driveability.
So after being parked 2weeks, we did tests, drive 2 miles, at 20-25mph, car shifted smooth, showed no symptoms, and checked fluid level, color, texture, odor again all was normal. Another week later (meanwhile parked) replaced gas cap, oil and antifreeze (normal), the throttle-body and MAF sensor cleaned. Spark Plugs checked, a 2nd test-drive at 20 - 40mph, all OBD2+ live data all good, shifted normal, smooth, until after 2miles started shifting slowly or delay into gear, so car parked. This car is up-to-date on maintenance and has had typical repairs including an ATF fluid flush at Valvoline in 2016. NO "open recalls." and this Rav4 has an on/off severe drive-ability problem, w/NO fault codes. Maybe wiring or sensors, PCM/ECM, issue. So far, local garages don't have Toyota Techstream, are not interested in doing diagnosis of sensors, wiring etc but just claiming it needs new transmission. Seems like a racket since Toyota sells lots of expensive tranny's this way.
