The car has run pretty well over the years, but we've had major issues with rust on the underside causing numerous parts failures. Most were not severe, but recently, the exhaust system developed a loud rattling, which I thought at first was a muffler issue. Then, when going over a speed bump, the rattling turned into a roar. Examining the fallout, I saw that the pipe that leads into the muffler had rusted through completely and snapped off, so the pipe was no longer connected to the muffler.
When I took it in to the mechanic, he said that there was so much rust damage that it would cost at least $2500 to replace what was already broken, plus up to another $1000 to replace some rusted parts that looked like they were soon to fail. Rather than sinking more money in, we decided to scrap it, so this officially is what killed our RAV for us.
