Rear-ended by a pickup and shoved into an SUV. My wife in the front passenger seat was twisted sideways on impact, which caused a fractured pelvis and her arthritic left hip joint was aggravated. She was unable to use the stairs to get to the bedroom for four months. It's difficult to say what her pain level and mobility status might have been by now had the airbag deployed, but we think the airbag would have prevented these injuries.
When we complained to Toyota, they had an engineering company do an inspection and read out the Event Data Recorder. They reported the airbags were operating properly at the time of the accident, and the crash forces were not severe enough to cause deployment. Also, there were no diagnostic trouble codes stored in the airbag control module and the airbags were not commanded to deploy. Perhaps they should have been.
