The hatchback opens higher than an American garage door when fully open. On 2 occasions I slowly backed out of the garage to clean the car and on both occasions I severely damaged the hatch. The second time the struts and window broke, damaging one rear quarterpanel.
I reported it to the insurance company - I wasn't going more than 1 mile per hour. Funny thing - the insurance company rep said that he had only been working there 2 months and already I was the third person to report this exact damage. He was very calm about it. It is very very common.
Since we had already raised the garage door AS FAR AS POSSIBLE, this was very frustrating. When we took the car to the body shop - I asked them to check with Toyota for recommendations to stop the hatch from opening soosssss far. They told the body shop to put a bungee cord on the hatch! Stupid! You are perpetuating a real problem. Should I just stop cleaning the car?
