excessive oil consumption excessive oil consumption

Toyota sold defective products - Prius between 2010-2014 which cost excessive oil consumption are NOT on recall. Law class action will solve the issue. I already paid about $2k in order to rebuild the engine. Also, shaft and electric water pump are not on recall anymore compare to 2nd generation of Prius. Toyota recently released the problem in public bulletin. Their dirty trick save them from fixing the major issue after 60k under extended warranty.

It is now (140,000 miles) using 1 quart of oil every 800 miles. The dealer changes the oil. Obviously if I forget to check regularly I risk oil starvation and ruining my engine.

Prius 3 1.8L

Shuttering at start up and acceleration. Dealer charged 1300.00 to diagnose, change egr and other sensors, and did not fix problem. They then told me that the number one cylinder was having issue, and another 2K to take apart motor to diagnose...no guess on cost after that!!

I purchased a used motor 1500.00, and paid 1500.00 to have mechanic install. Shuddering still continued with new motor. Mechanic diagnosed as wire cracked in harnesses to #1 and #2 cylinder. New engine did not burn oil like the old one. I was pissed that the dealer told me that I needed a new motor when there was an electrical issue causing shuddering. I was happy no more "quart a week habit"!

Fast forward 50,000 miles, the replacement motor has 100K now. Burning a quart every 800-1000 miles!! Very disappointed in the toyota build after seeing all of the others with this issue. I have thousands of dollars invested in this plastic pile of crap that is killing our environment by drinking oil as fast as it does gasoline!!

Interesting to see how this plays out. We are a big consumers of vehicles with a company fleet and a family of 5. Toyota has been a go to for us and I cannot count the number over the years. This will be the last purchase of toyota if they do not address these folks and me who have been hosed by sub par construction.

Been following the recommended maintenance schedule on all services. Car has been driven with the intention to own this car forever. Nevertheless, this excessive oil burning is a design flaw by Toyota. Rate at 2 quarts every 5000 miles.

Prius 1.8L

  • CVT transmission
  • 80,000 miles

Currently using approximately 1 quart of oil per 2,000 miles. That comes out to 5 quarts per 10,000 mile oil change--which is more than the 4.4 quarts that the car holds. No drips under the car. No clouds of smoke out of the exhaust. The oil usage slowed down, when I tried using Castril full synthetic oil--at the suggestion of a neighbor of mine, instead of the Toyota dealer oil and Mobil 1. It is a concern, that the exhaust system might be plugging up--due to this oil use issue. I have an extended warranty to 200,000.

The warranty company told me today, that, they will only cover internal engine part breakage, or whatever my factory warranty was. They will not cover the cause of the oil use, and they will not cover damage caused by lack of oil. So, I was told, to make sure I keep it full of oil. Toyota should consider how this will affect their future business. A big sales point to the Prius is, that, it should last a really long time. It may last a long time, yet. I'll keep adding oil and we shall see. In the mean time, I plan to get a road side assistance package that includes towing.

2013 Prius has 85,000 miles. Dealer is the only company that has been servicing vehicle. Toyota top off oil 4.4 qts with tampering devices around all area where oil plugs, etc.. Need to drive car & return back to dealer to inspect oil between 1,100 to 1,300 miles. Toyota has 1 qt equal to 1,100 miles to 1,300. When they check oil and add only a 1 qt to get it back to the full mark it is not cover. So for every 1 qt , my vehicle will be bone dry at 4,400 to 5,720 drive-able miles.

What gets me is Toyota say oil change at 10,000 miles. This does not add up to there method of oil consumption testing. What is really going on with these new vehicles. Looks like the new oil now being used adding to the consumption problems. Oil back in days was 30w or thicker than what is used now. Must now do your homework before you buy or have problems.

Prius Persona Series 1.8L

  • CVT transmission
  • 140,000 miles

Evidently this is known issue since at least 2011 and Toyota has chosen not to fix it in the newer Prius vehicles. The Camry's have the same issue. I have been a diehard Toyota fan forever and now I am going to start looking at other options. The toyota dealership is telling me we are going to have to replace or rebuild the engine to resolve the oil consumption issue. Other option is to add a quart of oil every other week to keep it full.

I bought toyota's so I wouldn't have to deal with stuff like this. Toyota just needs to step up and own this known issue and put out a recall or some compensation for the repair. Even going half on the rebuild cost would be something.

The problem seen in the 2010 has not been resolved. 2013 just hasn't seen the complaints yet because most people have not yet reached 100,000 miles.
