On June 30, 2021 I was traveling at approximately 45 miles per hour when a full size 2018 Chevrolet pickup T-boned my car coming from a cross street. In the accident when I was hit, the car was totally turned two and half times before coming to rest off the shoulder of the highway. No airbags were deployed although the car took a direct hit to the back passenger and wheel area. I purchased my Prius in August of 2014 with a little over 70,000 miles from Pecheles Toyota in Washington NC. The Prius had one prior owner and had been serviced at Pecheles. I have always kept the car serviced since purchasing it. I had to take the car in to the Toyota dealership one time a few years back for what Toyota claimed was airbag deployment issue. It was suppose to be something with the front airbags.
When I got the car back, I heard was seemed to be "crackling" noises at times. I did eventually call the Toyota dealership telling them about the strange noise and ask if it could have anything to do with the airbag "work". I heard the noise every now and again but thought nothing of it as they assured me it was not related to the work they had done, or an airbag issue. Needless to say after the crash I was extremely concerned. No one seemed to be alarmed at the fact that the airbags never deployed.
Prior to this, I had a 4 door Toyota echo, and I also purchased a 2010 Toyota Yaris with 11,500 original miles last year. Now, I am deeply concerned about the safety ratings which drew me to "Toyota". Prior to a career move I owned a Subaru Forrester that I gave up due to gas mileage. I took a position where I drive an hour each way to work in June of 2011. The safety ratings are only good if the vehicle works properly in a crash. My other concern is, no one seems to care if the product did not work properly. Had one of my teenagers been with me, or both, one would have been where the pickup T-boned my car.
I searched for a place to contact the Toyota company about the malfunction and found no where to report it. My accident is recorded and my car has been totaled out by the insurance company. I know that often times vehicles like these are sold and eventually become on the road vehicles again with salvage titles. My concern is that the only suspected damage would be what happened in the wreck if they were thinking about "repairing the vehicle. What about the fact that if it ended up in another collision that the airbags are not going to protect the passengers?
