Recently the speedometer/combination meter display has begun to get stuck off when turning on the 09 Prius. During this condition, the car will drive, but it won't record mileage, the rear hatch won't open, and the car won't turn off the normal way. I had to research online to find out that this is a common problem.
If your car is stuck on, press and hold the Prius power button 3 or more seconds, and the car will shut off eventually. When you turn it back on, the display may return to normal for a time.
Toyota issued an extended warranty on this for a total of 9 years, but I'm outside of that warranty now. I don't feel like dropping $1000 to have it fixed so at this time I will deal with it. If you want to do research, google prius combination meter fail for more info.
The multi-function screen went black. Took to dealer "AutoNation Toyota Ft. Myers" 2555 Colonial Blvd Ft. Myers 33907. They gave a verbal cost to repair of $7,000. That is correct, $7,000. I did not have it repaired. Recently, when I wanted to sell the car I went online and found a used part for $300. My mechanic will install it for a couple hours labor.
I will never buy any Toyota again. Not only was the price to repair outrageous, but the dealer's employee was snotty and dismissive.
The Multifunction display on my 2009 Toyota Prius went dark at around 93,000 miles. I contacted the dealer and they quoted $1400 to replace it ($700 for the unit and $700 for labor).
It was frustrating driving the car without the display because it is difficult to control the temperature, radio, and CD without the display. In addition the rear visibility is not great so I missed the back up camera. I was very frustrated the the display would burn out so early in the car's life and that the dealer charged so much to repair.
I found a video on the internet that showed how to remove the display in 2 minutes. I sent it away to be repaired for $300 and re-installed the unit myself. The problem is so common that a third party is marketing a solution. It seems like if a third party can develop a solution this cheap that Toyota would pass on a cheap or free replacement program.
After Multi Function Display went black I was left with very limited way of controlling climate and radio setting. I can only control climate with few limited setting on the wheel. Air either blow full blast or not at all.There is also no way to know what mileage you are getting. I called Toyota HQ and they told me it is not covered since I was not under extended warranty anymore. Local dealer gave me estimate of $2K. My local mechanic has used ones for $600.
Toyota HQ was not sympathetic. I hear form other that it is common problem and there really should be a recall.
