Heat was working fine then one day, all of a sudden, no heat at all was coming into the cabin. No warning lights. No error codes from the computer. The car was running perfectly...other than no heat. About a month before, I had taken it in for service and I asked the mechanics to check the fluids and replace them if needed. They reported that the coolant looked fine and did NOT need replacing.
I searched on the internet for several hours and only found a couple of instances related to no cabin heat. The only one that I found that exactly matched my problem on another 2008 model was a thread on PriusChat (https://priuschat.com/threads/08-prius-no-heat-blowing-only-cold-air.92782/)
I passed the info to my mechanic and he accepted it with a bit of skepticism. However, after a day of general troubleshooting, he could not find any error code, electrical or mechanical problem. On the second day, he started pulling the components and...Voilà !...a clogged pump due to rubber insulation pieces!!
The cleared the pump filter and have the debris collected.
The heat is, once again, working and my Prius is running just fine.
I would like to know what is deteriorating that would expose soft rubber insulation to the coolant's sealed system.
I am left wondering how long it will be before I get another clog.. and if this poses any danger to some other component or engine is damaged due to overheating because the coolant can't circulate properly.
