dash board intermittedly goes out and does not light up

Just paid Toyota $1,400 for a new "computer" and when I drove it off the lot the next day the dashboard refused to light up. What the hell!

The dash display cuts out completely which leaves you with no speed, fuel, odometer indications. The backup camera does not work and the car will not turn off or lock. After numerous searches and false leads that this was due to a low 12V battery I finally found the real problem. The combination meter in the dash. It's a faulty part that Toyota knew was a problem and instead of doing a recall on it kicked out an extended warranty. I've been dealing with this problem randomly for over 2 years and finally just found the information about the combination meter. I never received any information from Toyota about the extended warranty and they won't honor it because I'm 5 months past it now. The dealer did tell me they'd replace it for $915. This was after they told me it was warrantied and had me bring it in to get fixed. Two hours after they took my car they called me to tell me they weren't going to cover it and gave me a list of things they wanted to fix adding up to about $1500. I told them to give me my car back and they lost a customer.

When I turn on the headlights the inside dash lights dim SIGNIFICANTLY. I took it to the dealership and I was told my battery wasn't holding a charge and it needed to be replaced. I was quoted over $800 to fix and I had to leave without any remedy. I did a self check of my battery and found the battery was holding a full charge and does not show any significant drain issues when lights are turned on.

I've been dealing with electrical issues since the water pump failure that caused the car to shut down in full drive on the freeway. Or at least that is the excuse given to me by Toyota. The dealership won't take any steps until I change the battery because they say their equipment can't get a reading since my battery won't hold a charge. But when you use the check system within the car itself the battery is fine. The headlights have gone out AGAIN the other lights are blowing out, and the issue with the dash lights continue.

This is an ongoing problem with this car, and the manufacturer does not want to deal with it. The dashboard lights went out, and car would not shut off, or lock. I had to fill the car up so it would not run out of gas and keep it in a friends garage so it would not be stolen. Think long and hard about buying a toyota prius, as Toyota will not stand behind their car and its problems. There are other hybrids out there.

This is the fifth time in one year the dashboard has gone out, I called the dealer twice and they told me it was just the weather. I did some research and for a limited time they were replacing these. However, I did not get contacted and I had been into two different dealerships, once for another recall and for a new 12 vlt battery. They did not once mentioned the dashboard problem.

We need to start a whole car recall on this 2007 Prius and a pain and suffering lawsuit as we all overpaid for this vehicle that is no better than a Pinto. The Prius won't last another five years as the main battery is now going out and the dealer assures me that is not the problem, that would never happen.

Prius ES 1.5

I just recently bought this Prius. It ran fine and the suddenly twice now the dashboard display cut out and the engine won't shut off. I am contacting the dealer today. I bought he car "As is" from dealer so I may have to contact Toyota. Worst case scenario is a lawsuit because this is a serious and dangerous problem.

Update from Aug 28, 2013: at 8/16/13, Dashboard display out, car wont turn off. Drove around and continued to turn off and it finally did turn off. Restart and dash back on.

Update from Aug 28, 2013: Mileage correction, 125,647. currently at dealer today 8/28/13..waiting

Update from Oct 27, 2015: Solved, bad battery. It turns out the small battery is essential to running of all dash and etc. A little something they at Toyota were reluctant to confirm and suggested possibly. Had it been clarified when I first bought it it would have been under warranty. Since they essentially played dumb I ended up paying 270 for a new battery at Toyota.

Funny that after 3 trips to the Dealer it was an employee at "Oreily Auto Parts" that tested the battery and confirmed it had a bad cell and could not charge. Needless to say as nice as the service people are at Toyota I will probably never return. Car runs fine now.

Again car dash lights went dead and car would not shut off. Reverse did not beep as usual. Drove car around lot and when parked it turned off and when started again it all worked. Second time it happened.

Update from Aug 28, 2013: Mileage was about 125800.

Update from Sep 12, 2013: Contacted the salesman and he had me bring it in for service. Turns out it was a factory part item and fully covered. They fixed the car and while it was in the shop they gave me a 2011 Prius as a free rental. Didn't cost me a dime! Since I have had no more issues. Thank you Toyota! I love my car. As a side note, the best mileage I have seen combined so far is 43.5 MPG.

Prius Hybrid 1.5L

Dashboard display randomly cut out in a Tim Horton's parking lot and wouldn't turn back on despite multiple restarts of the car. Called Steve at Autobeyours (the dealer whom I purchased the car from last year) and was made aware that Toyota had extended the warranty on their MFD's to nine years due to this very issue. Took the car out to Voss Toyota in Beavercreek and they diagnosed the problem promptly, and replaced the part for free. It took some three weeks for the part to come in, but they put me behind the wheel of a 2012 Corolla until then, free of charge. So I've gotta hand it to Toyota for owning up to their problems and fixing them.

Failure of the dash instrument display while driving is a safety issue. This system is a composite error. Everything fails at once ;the speed mileage gas gauge etc.; a well engineered car would have these systems separate.

The Prius electronics are the least comforting. A single failure can bring down multiple safety features the owner needs. The electronics can go haywire at anytime. It is a ridiculously over engineered car which gives the owner the least ownership and control. It is as if the care is totally owned at all times by Toyota and the dealership. If the axillary battery goes flat you can't open the hatch to get to it.(there is a way to work around this by attaching jump points to the fuse box...saves you a tow and a massive dealership bill) If the Key fob fails you could be stranded a new fob costs $300( real value is $50). The transfer of hot radiator coolant to a thermal tank attracts rats in the winter ( work around is to place rat traps under the hood)..

If you want to fell totally helpless or stranded on the highway this is the hybrid for you.

dashboard display cuts out at random intervals and you cannot see how fast you are going along, with other info that is normally displayed around the speedometer. when this happens, the vehicle will not completely power down when you try to press the start/stop button and the key stays locked in the dashboard. so far the dealer has not been able to fix the problem. looking for anyone who found a solution to this problem
