I purchased extended warranty when I purchased the car in 2006. That only took to 5 yrs or 100,000 miles. Most cars maintained to manufacturers specifications and not abused do not need a new engine or repairs costing $4500 at 125,000 miles. This repair cost seems excessive and I will not be purchasing another Prius with this knowledge now. The initial cost of the vehicle plus this repair so early in the game makes it a bad option compared to a Corolla or Camry.
Update from Jun 18, 2013: After several phone calls with Toyota in California I was told Toyota would provide new hybrid battery and all I had to pay for was labor. I was very happy with this as the repair ended up costing me less than $500. I was informed that it was because I'd been such a loyal customer.
