My 1993 toyota pickup has the 22re 4 cylinder motor that I THOUGHT had legendary quality. With only 120,000 miles on the original motor, the timing chain failed and destroyed the motor. This truck was well maintained and never beat on.

The problem is that toyota tried to save money by replacing the double-roller timing chain with a cheaper single roller style. The single roller requires a complicated tension system to account for chain stretch. The crappy design affects all 22r engines made after 1986. My mechanic was suprised that the engine lasted this long!! According to the toyota dealership, 4cylinder engines in cars and trucks produced between 1986 and 2002 will require a timing chain replacement every 75,000 miles. Timing belt style engines will last much longer.

Toyota is Crap!!!! I will never buy another toyota! They can't be trusted! I bought a 1977 chevy nova with 228,000 original miles on it for $200. I have been driving that until I find a newer car. Or maybe i'll just keep driving the chevy since it runs so good!
