Both models were a joint GM-Toyota venture, manufactured together at a NUMMI production facility in Fremont, CA. Only the heating & A/C systems are different.

After looking online I saw others mentioning that 2003-2008 Matrix and Corolla models (and likely Pontiac Vibe) have had the odometer stop at the same 299,999 km.
I contacted Toyota Canada and they tell me "due to design limitations, odometers may stop working at 299,999 km". Another rep said Toyota Canada is aware of the problem but it is a defect from a parts supplier and Toyota is under no obligation to recall or repair the problem.
The trip odometer still functions.
