I was trying to park my car by backing into a parking space on the second floor of a parking garage. As I was getting closer to the concrete wall behind me, my brakes wouldn't stop. I put my Highlander in drive to avoid hitting the wall, it moved forward but as I got closer to the back of a parked pickup truck across from me, the brakes did not respond. I put it in neutral and it started to roll back, I then put it in drive, and when the brakes did not respond again, I hit the hitch on the back of the pick up truck going less than 5 mph. When I bounced back from the hit on the truck I slammed it into park. There were no warning lights or messages on my instrument panel warning me of a possible problem. I had to be pushed into a parking space to allow cars going into and out of the parking garage. When my husband got to the scene he checked the brakes and noted they were flat on the floor. We had it towed to a collision shop recommended by my insurance company. They checked it out and said they could find no malfunction in the brake system and it was safe to drive.
I researched complaints on 2017 Highlander brakes and saw there were several (16) and that 2018 Highlanders were recalled for brake failures. l reported my concerns to my insurance claims agent, the collision shop, and the insurance company representative. The insurance rep and they said they would stand behind the work of the collision shop, I'm not questioning that, I'm worried about my life and others should the brakes fail again on the highway, at a school bus stop or a traffic light. I don't know how different the brake system is from the 2017 and the 2018 (recalled) Highlanders and I'm not sure where to get that information. LS, Florida
