While driving on the road the engine shuts down....happened several times while my wife was driving and again when I was driving the car. Happened once while making a left turn in the middle of the intersection with kids in the back seat and was barely able to clear intersection due to momentum. Almost had a heart attack...with cars coming straight through honking...
When the engine shuts down the message on the screen says....engine has shut down put your vehicle in part and start again....and it does restart after I put it in park and start again
Talked to the dealership and getting them to look into it.
Update from Nov 28, 2017: Over the period of 3-4 months, I took the vehicle to different Toyota dealerships multiple times. But they were not able to find the root cause and just kept resetting the computer to make the issue temporarily go away. After multiple visits to the dealership and involving Toyota Canada I was told that they have identified the issue to Mass Air Flow Valve sensor. I was told it has been fixed and would never reoccur. Sure enough, we started having the same issue within 7-8 months again. Exact same symptoms with car engine shutting down in the middle of road. After not getting proper attention at the dealership, I tried to involve Toyota Canada and got a very curt response from a customer care specialist, who told us in no simple words that Toyota doesn’t give out cars for free. When I asked whether Toyota would involve its engineers in finding the root cause of the problem. I was told that Engineers only get involved if there is an accident or injury. I am pleading with everyone I am talking to that it is very unsafe and I don’t want my family to drive a vehicle that you don’t know when it is going to shut down. My wife has started avoiding the highway and making left turns because she is afraid that engine would stall in the middle of the highway or in the intersection.
This vehicle was our third Toyota and probably the last one I would ever buy. I always thought Toyota had a better quality record and customer care focus. But that seems to be a thing of the past and something that only exist in business/ history books.
On top of this, had a very unpleasant experience with Toyota Canada Customer Care specialist (Stephanie). Very unprofessional and enforcing her view point on us, not letting us speak at all. Repeating the same information over and over and when I try to speak she threatened me that I am interrupting her. After few minutes she disconnected the call and did not answer the phone when I tried to reach her.
