My car was hit by a deer in August 2013. I told the repair company that there was something wrong with the brakes when I hit the deer. They did not seem to slow the vehicle down correctly. When I took the vehicle back to the repair shop and asked if they would contact the insurance company about the brakes, the repair company stated that no insurance company would cover the brakes. Thus, I followed their suggestion and I had the brakes and rotors fixed at a Toyota garage.
On December 20, 2013, my car was positioned behind a van at a stop sign. As I was completely stopped, imagine my surprise when my car lurched forward and hit the van in the rear. As this was occurring, I attempted to brake, but the brakes did not work. No one was cited for this accident, but the policeman suggested that I have my vehicle checked by a dealer. When I returned the vehicle to the repair shop for an estimate, the individual who was giving my car a cursory examination stated: "This is just another Toyota horror story." He went on to say that it could be a fuel line issue instead of just a brake issue.
After reviewing articles on the internet, I now understand that my 2012 Highlander has some sort of unintended acceleration problem. This is why my vehicle did not want to stop when the deer was hit, and when I was sitting stopped behind a van at a stop sign, the vehicle lurched forward on its own and hit the van. I just want my Toyota 2012 Highlander examined by a licensed Toyota technician to see what the problem is. I attempted to get an appointment on December 23, 2013, but the Toyota dealership did not have an opening until January 7, 2014. That's a long time to wait so I will attempt to get another appointment at a Toyota dealership.
