CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2010 Highlander's rear liftgate thinks it's open when it's closed and then once it's actually open, you might not be able to shut it again. Remember folks, if your liftgate is stuck open for more than 4 hours, consult your mechanic.

I purchased this car in July 2017. Naturally I have had not had to use the back up tail lights until it has gotten dark on the East Coast. I went to church and noticed when I left I could not see anything when I tried to back up. I took the Highlander to my import mechanic and he said that is all the back up lights I have, about 3 inches at top of large brake light. The only "fix" he suggested was to try expensive LED lights, however, there is a frosted coating that may hinder these lights also. I find it hard to believe I have these large lights and at the very top is a small light to back up with, this is just nonsensical. I would not have purchased this auto if I had known about this safety problem. I feel when you cannot see anything, and I mean anything at night when you back up this is definitely a safety concern. I do not live in the city, I live where there are not any streetlights or any night lights. How does the Toyota dealer expect this to be safe in any situation? I traded in a 2004 CRV I never had any problem with those back up lights. It is hard to understand I go to a bigger more expensive car and have this problem. Any suggestions from anyone on how to adequately fix this problem?
