My 2009 Toyota Highlander (owned 4 years with only 68000 miles) all of the sudden, while backing into a parking spot, stalled out. I have never had any problems prior to this. I still had dashboard and lights, warning symbols that came on for the 1st time, steering symbol, tire symbol and battery symbol. The car could not be restarted, it would not turn over or do anything. If I was on the highway when it stalled out of no where, we could have been killed!
I was about 60 miles away from home and had to call triple A, they tried to jump it- no luck. Had to be towed home on a flat bed. A local garage checked the battery and starter, neither were the problem. When they checked the engine it would manually crank a little one way and back again however that was it. They thought it was an engine problem so had it towed to the dealer. According to the technician, they found nothing wrong electronically, nothing wrong with battery, starter or transmission. They said they could manually crank engine 170 degrees in both direction and it would stop. They torn down engine and after 2 1/2 hours couldn't diagnose problem. At this point I was told that it definitely is a MAJOR engine issue and the engine would need to be replaced but they couldn't tell me what the problem was unless they continued to tear down the engine.
My perfectly fine car until this that had all appropriate oil and necessary maintenance would need a new or used engine or they could continue to tear down for who knows how much money to diagnose. I asked if they would assist with the cost for anything and they told me to call CEC. I called the CEC 3 times and the final word was that I would NOT get any assistance since I am over warranty by 8000 miles. I strongly feel that this is a TOYOTA major manufacturing issue with engines and the fact that they wouldn't give me anything to assist me with the cost is unbelievable. They could care less! I am posting on here to see if anyone else has had the same problem and then maybe there will be a recall on the engine. The dealer tried to sell me another SUV and would discount an extended warranty. Big deal! I had to pay them for never diagnosing a faulty engine...that they built it is ridiculous.
This was my first and LAST Toyota, they are awful to their customers and could care less. These engines should be looked into and recalled...will they wait until people are killed... And then recall?? I'm disgusted with all of this and the hardship it has caused me.
