I have the same issue, tailgate won't open. Tailgate is not closed evenly, the side of the tailgate (left) with the motor is closed further than the right side. Motor seized. Taking it in tomorrow.
I never had a problem with my 2009 Toyota Highlander until the other day. Closed the lift gate with the auto button, it closed but heard a noise as it was just about down. The left side of the door closed but the right side was not flush, showing the tailgate was still opened. Couldn't unlock it to open it again but was finally able to get the right side closed. The lift gate will not open at all! When I press the release I can hear it trying to open, it releases the lock but the door will not open. Is this an ongoing problem? It seems there are issues with the lift gates, what can be done to rectify the problem?
