I purchased this vehicle, new, in 2006. I noticed the knocking noise several days ago. I took it to my regular mechanic immediately. I was advised not to drive it, and to contact my Toyota dealer to find out if there were any recalls or similar complaints. Since the warranty had expired, they advised me to ask if there was anything Toyota could do for me since the vehicle has only 52,067 miles on it. I contacted the dealer and was told there was nothing they could do for me. I then contacted the Toyota experience center, and was told the same thing. I understand the warranty has expired, but I also feel that the engine should last longer 52,000 miles. I was planning on trading for a mew Highlander this year, but I feel that since Toyota does not stand behind their product, I will not stand behind them. Therfore, I will be purchasing some other make of vehicle. I have not repaired this vehicle as yet, but as soon as I do, I will definitely not be keeping it.

Update from Jun 26, 2012: I have been in further contact with my dealer, who has been in contact with 2 different toyota representatives, and has declined any toyota assistance in this matter. I am truly dissappointed in my dealer as well as Toyota for not standing behind their product better. I understand any vehicle can have a probem. That does not make the brand or model bad. But at 52,067 miles I would hope for more , not being a fault of neglect or improper maintenance, but rather due to engine failure, something breaking in the crankcase.
