We took our Cruiser in to be looked at for this issue, as it was under warranty. The tech rode with me and I could not get the Cruiser to do the shudder and the tech gave me some advise. If it does it again shift to 4th and if it stops I know just what it is no big deal a valve in there is just wearing out, and it is an easy fix, nothing to worry about. It hardly did it and not with everyone and not everyday or everytime you drove it. I left thinking ok, they are the experts and I trust them. A year goes by and it is time for a major service and again we ask them to check the shudder as it still does it. We leave and 2 hours go by, 3 hours go by, 4th hour hits. We call no answer. Then we get a call, Sorry to tell you , your transmission is "shot"! We were shocked as it drives fine, no warning lights, no slipping of gears, no hottness etc. We asked that they change the oil anyway and headed back, in the loaner we were given, and by the way they had never offered this before. Upon arriving they wanted to give us a quote to trade in on a new one. Hmmm what is it going to cost to fix it? Well you know you should not put new parts on an old transmission, so we will have to just put a remanufactured one in at the sum of $4500. Then he said I can't understand why in March last year they did not keep this and go through it better as it was under warranty. Hmm we want to know the same thing! My husband tried reading the paperwork on service order but it was taken from him, and we have yet to see it. they did not even make us pay for our oil change. They had loaned us a 2013 Highlander for the day, odd to us ! We got home and did some research to see that this is an ongoing issue with many Cruisers! They told us they had never heard of it! Well there are forums full of it! Some replaced the tranny to have it start it again, others fixed the torchconverter to have it stop, some spark plugs and it stopped, and some a valve and something else cant remember now. In all cases it was not throwing a code, it took time and patients on the techs to go through and try and find it. One lady even had the same thing we did. Under warranty and go ahead and drive it come back when it gets worse, she did out of warranty and they fixed it and her service department and dealer went to bat for her as it was noted while under warranty. We are very upset that our dealer is not doing the same thing. All they want to do is sale us a new one. We want to keep ours and buy a new one in a year or so, not now!
