My 07 fj has only 104K miles on it. My mechanic told me it is not safe to drive do to the under body rusting and falling apart. I have spend a lot of time and money up keeping my fj. I now will have to get the complete rear axel and other components replaced before I can drive it again. Something needs to be done to fix these issues. It's complete negligence that this takes place to so many of these vehicles. I'm just thankful I got it to my mechanic before something happened to the fj with my 4 1/2 & 1 1/2 year old inside. Please make this right.
I am the original owner of the vehicle with excessive frame rust occurring within 4 years of owning the vehicle. The rust is so excessive that the Toyota deemed the car too damaged to drive because a majority of the frame was too week and, therefore unsafe to drive
The frame has rusted at all major welds and along the frame components. Very little metal is left to hold the rear suspension to the frame mounts of the car. A Toyota bumper hitch failed while driving with a trailer attached because therear crossmember rusted through. The rear gas tank straps also rusted through and have been replaced. Gas tank was hanging by one strap.
My son was driving home from school when he heard a rattle/bang when he took a corner or went over a bump. He told me about the noise as soon as he got home. We took the fj out for a drive and I heard the noise coming from the driver's side. Upon inspecting the exterior drivers side I found that the left side, rear trailing arm mounting point and a section of the fj's frame, had torn away from the frame. The trailing arms was not floating, unattached. We are very luck that the trailing did not drop while my son was driving home, as it would have been driven into the pavement, possibly causing a catastrophic accident. I have called Toyota corporate, who can provide not solution on how to repair this issue. Again, I am lucky my son was on secondary roads and not the highway and the trailing arm fell to the pavement.
Upon state inspection, severe rust and corrosion was discovered on the frame. Not only did it fail inspection, my mechanic strongly urged me not to drive it, as the rear axle has a possibility of falling out.
Toyota's have been having rust issues with frames. A government mandated fix for Tundra and Tacoma have been approved, but not for Fj cruisers, even though it's a similar model. I need to have my frame rust issues fixed in order to pass inspection.
My 2007 Fj cruiser has major problems with rust. This includes being informed today that the frame has holes that have rusted through and the vehicle would not pass inspection. I have already put a lot of money into the vehicle replacing rusted parts including replacing the fuel tank straps last year, parts of the suspension and radiator. This seems excessive damage due to rust and creates an unsafe Toyota product.
It has taken a few years since I keep my Fj cruiser garaged, but I found a sound mat on the inside of the doors that retain water and cause rust. My problem right now is in the left door (driver's side) and the rust from inside the door has finally made it's way completely through the door. I am attaching photos showing the perforation which is well over 1/8 of an inch deep. I only have 57450 miles on my vehicle due to being overseas in syria, iraq, and afghanistan as a civilian dod war zone Pilot so weather and rain have not been an issue while it was garaged. Vehicles are designed to let water in the door then drain through the drain holes at the bottom of the door but Toyota but this sound mat on the inside of the door which causing problems for myself and a few other unfortunate Fj cruiser owners. Knowing this is a design problem / defect from Toyota, I feel they should cover the repair because this issue it outside of normal use due to it's design. I live inland and salt free down here is Florida so road salt or road chemicals cannot be blamed. All I can do for now is fill in the holes and use touch up paint which ruins the appearance overall of my vehicle because it is kept in top notch shape inside and out and this door not only looks bad, but over time will completely rust through costing my hundreds of dollars.
I am the third owner of a 2007 Toyota Fj cruiser, this vehicle has major rust overtaking the frame and all suspension parts and mounts, even the inside of the frame is rusting out. This seems to be a regular issue. I am very concerned I am going to have suspension parts break off while I'm driving, I have already had to replace the fuel tank straps that rusted in half while driving doen the highway.
The entire frame is badly rusted to the point of being unsafe. The car has been regularly washed and well maintained. All other components are in great working order, but the car now need extensive frame repairs to remain road worthy. In addition, the straps holding the fuel tank in place rusted through and nearly caused the tank to fall out of the car.
Severe rust on critical suspension components despite frequen undercarriage washing and care. Control arms and tank straps will need to be replaced and mounts welded
2007 Toyota Fj cruiser frame rotting from inside and out. Rear upper control arm mounts rusting looking like its about to break off. Unsafe to drive. 13 year old frame should not be anywhere near this condition.
The frame is extremely rusty on all of the Fj cruisers, just like the Tacoma and sequoia. There is no paint or undercoating applied on the inside of these frames so they rust from the inside out.
My vehicle is getting pretty rusty, even with proper maintenance and cleaning. The frame and suspension components pretty soon are going to become unsafe. I'm not going to be able to drive the truck anymore, the value is still pretty high, it just have 118.000 miles.
