Typical fuel economy reported by owners starts at 35 MPG, with 40-50 MPG easily possible with some thoughtful driving. With not even a hint of any major problems, the Toyota Echo is a fantastically reliable car with fuel economy that puts some "eco-friendly" hybrids 10 years newer to shame.
I bought a used Toyota expecting a level of reliability; instead this has proven the least dependable vehicle I've owned in 23 years. My Chryslers and Nissans had far fewer issues. I've spent $1,700 on repairs in 3 months - belts, breaks, gasoline flush, etc. Not yet done is a $950 repair to fix the gas valve flapper and charcoal canister contaminated by the faulty valve. I was told by the dealership that this problem is the likely cause of morning start hesitations and repeated sputtering and prevents more than $0.75 of gas pumping in at a time before nozzle kickback. It takes about 20 minutes to fill it's tank. Now the exhaust is also failing and the vehicle jolts shifting down gears at about 50/mph or 80/kmph. It's very fuel efficient - especially when it isn't moving at all, which regrettably is too often. Crappy, cheap interior, poor paint job, bad breaks ... Overall rating: 3/10.
