Car will start and stop unexpectedly. Once you got it to restart after many tries, and waiting 10-15 min, check engine lights, traction control etc... will light up on but it doesn't drive. This problem happens many times and I'm not sure what is causing it beside what's described on here.
Had the EXACT same problem that "Steve L. of Prospect, CT, USA" reported back on Dec 27th 2010. Car has 25700 miles on it and was purchased new back in 4/2008. Had to have it towed to the dealer. Long story short: Toyota/dealer paid the whole tab, inculding towing, reset the ECM and added some type of carbon cleaner to the gas.
Tried starting my Corolla with 28k miles about 50 times until my wrist got tired, with no luck. The engine would turn over, so I knew it wasn't an issue with the starter or battery, plus the battery measured the correct voltage. I could smell gas as well, so I knew gas was getting to the engine. The spark plugs were firing as well.
The next day I called AAA, and the guy was finally able to start it after about 10 tries of keeping the key in the start position, and beating on the gas pedal. Turns out, this is all related to a carbon buildup that occurs within Toyota engines, particularly after sitting for a while during cold weather.

The fix/hack is to reprogram the computer. I'm not sure how this will fix a mechanical issue, bu whatever, I'll have to wait and see if it happens again.
I am going to start adding fuel injection cleaner every 10k miles or so, to try and prevent the carbon buildup.
started 2009 corolla, the engine shook but I thought it had started. I put in drive would not move, put car in park started up again and it started ok but I had a bunch of lights come up on the dash, check engine light, trac control, stability control but car drove ok, so I took it to dealership and after 2 days they found that it was a bad oxygen sensor, replaced and got he car back its running ok.
