gearbox failed. tow truck driver and mechanic both said it sounded like the same problem. the nut off the fifth gear came off and gear box fell apart internally. i called Toyota and after constant questioning the guy I spoke to said that it is a known fault but....it isn't a fault if you know what I mean........yeah right! He said that off all the 2002 toyota corolla's that were put out this problem only happened to a small handful of cars....and that should make me feel better how????? I then asked that if this is a known problem by Toyota have they done anything to remedy this.....the answer surprise surprise was.........yes they changed the design of the gearbox in the 2005 model.......funny that! just outside the 3 year manufacture warranty on the 2002 model. again small consolation to those of us who got stiffed with a lemon gearbox! ps. I may have 175,000 k on the clock, but the first 100,000 was as a fleet lease vehicle (constant check and services as part of the contract)....not good toyota!
