CarComplaints.com Notes: There must have been something in the water at the plant where they built the eighth generation Corollas, especially the 1998 and 1999 model years.
Outside of airbag problems being reported to NHTSA, this is about as dependable a car as you’ll find. But good luck finding one; owners say they want a new car, but can’t justify trading in their Corolla because the darn thing just keeps rolling.

Need to trouble shoot: 2x in two months driving 50-55 MPH. Had gone 12 to 15 miles. Suddenly VERY strong gas odor. Stopped, called AAA. After siting aprox. 1 hr. they took it to my mechanic. He drove it around town, no problem. Aprox a month no problem. Second time same kind of experience, except I pulled off road for maybe 5-10 min. let it set. Then started continued with no problem since.
The gas smells very strong which scares me because of fire etc.
I know NOTHING so using common sense theory. Is it possible in gas line etc. to much gas trying to go to what ever point it needs to go? Not burning properly. fuel injection problem?
I have not gone or called Toyota dealer as I am 80 female way below poverty income. Know charges would be beyond my means.
My current mech. could probably fix it if he had a clue what the problem is.
