I spotted the 2014 Camry Hybrid online and arranged with a sales consultant to see it. During the test drive, the vehicle suddenly began moving faster with my foot on the brake. I was able to bring the vehicle under control and when I started to discuss what had occurred with the sales consultant seated next to me, he changed the subject to my trade in. After a very awkward sales process in which I was forced to accept window tinting I clearly did not want -- windows were already tinted enough -- I went to visit a friend and we went together to visit my partner in the hospital. I was starting to enjoy the car when the engine started revving while I was waiting at a stoplight. The Camry Hybrid moved forward and would not stop. I recalled a similar experience on my 2004 Sebring and shifted the Camry Hybrid into neutral.
Toyota made sure that I was stuck with the problem and refused to investigate the issue. I spoke to numerous staff at the dealership, Shottenkirk Desert Lexus. They waited until they no longer had to take the car back then they said they could fix it and led me to believe they did, which resulted in another unintended acceleration that I was not prepared for and I stomped on the brake pedal so hard as an automatic reaction, that my toe was injured and a week later, my toe had to be amputated. I never made a payment on the vehicle, and made arrangements to have the car tested through Brand Engagement. Nothing was ever done. The Camry Hybrid remained dormant in my carport for 9 months until Toyota retrieved it, 6 months after my letter to Tetsuo Ogawa, CEO of Toyota... North America.
Despite my calls to Brand Engagement and other offices at Toyota, nothing was done I got to know staff members well enough to hold conversations with them about their friends and family. I won their trust and they agreed with me, but only quietly. I understood that and knew they had their jobs to consider. I came to understand and appreciate the personal lives at Toyota and documented everything. I connected with friends and family of Greg Shottenkirk who took on the lead role after his father died and mother was seriously injured in an automobile accident during the early hours of the morning on the day of their anniversary in September 1989.
Driving my 3 week old, 2014 Toyota Camry hybrid, I pulled into a parking space for my 8:15 A.M. beauty shop appointment. The car was facing the wall of the two story building. After stopping, I decided to pull up a bit more and straighten out the car. I was just lifting my foot from the brake, when I felt a surge of power. I was taken by complete surprise and started screaming as the car crashed headlong into the wall of the building.
