CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2009 Camry used to be adorned with our “Seal of Pretty Good†but that was before an alarming number of complaints started rolling in for excessive oil consumption.
Owners are being caught off-guard with how quickly their cars are running out of oil. No leaks, no spills, just 1 quart of vanishing oil in as little as 1,200 miles. Toyota maintains this is “normal†for the 2AZ-FE engine, even though they issued a TSB for the problem in August of 2011.

Class Action Lawsuit Regarding Excessive Oil Consumption - My 2009 Toyota Camry through a rod through the engine block because of excessive oil consumption. After speaking with a dealership and corporate Toyota refused to cover the cost of replacing the engine which the dealer quoted at 5,000 USD for a used engine and 6,000 USD for a rebuilt engine. An independent mechanic indicated that the rod was thrown due to low oil pressure, there were no leaks apparent, clearly the car burned through a significant amount of oil causing catastrophic engine failure. I was left no option but to seek legal aide. The link included is to information regarding a class action lawsuit that is currently in progress regarding this issue: http://www.classactionsnews.com/consumer/toyota-excessive-engine-oil-consumption-class-action-lawsuit
I purchased this car brand new and have kept up the oil changes every 3000 miles. The light came on in the car and I looked in the car manual and it explained that it was the engine oil light. When I went to get it checked it was 3 quarts low on engine oil. I took it back to the dealer and they advised that Toyota was having complaints on the 2009 Camry's using excessive oil resulting in replacing the pins and pistons. To have it covered when not under warranty it had to be monitored. So every 1000 miles I am to check the engine oil. At this time it is showing that within 3000 miles I have used 2 1/2 quarts. Toyota states that it is normal for 1 quart to be used in a 3 month period. This is not satisfactory and if anyone wants to start a class action suit, I am in. This car should not have any engine problems and it is only 3 years old.
Oil consumption of about a pint per 1000 miles started just this month on my 2009 Toyota Camry. Before that no problem. Dealer says up to a quart of oil consumption per 1200 miles is within acceptable limits. Now that is a surprise. It's certainly not acceptable to me. We don't drive this car hard. We've changer oill every 4000 to 5000 miles. Oil consumption shouldn't be a problem at all. Dealer waffled when pressed for an explanation, but suggested Toyota may have put in "Low tension piston rings" to increase fuel efficiency. I see that raplacing the engine block has occured for some others who have posted here.
I don't know how to push for a class action suit to hold Toyota accountable, but feel this needs to be done. I will be glad to help out if someone knows how to do this.
Took my Camry for a routine oil change like I get at the Toyota dealer every 5000 miles; reported that my oil light had come on occasionally when I stepped on the brake; and they said my car only had one quart of oil in it--no leaks or anything wrong that they could find; they also stated that they wanted to check it in 500 miles, so I am taking it tomorrow (12/28/11); they also said that there has been a problem with 2009 Camrys leaking. I am going to wait and see what they will do, mine is still under warranty until 100,000 miles. After reading the complaints on here I'm afraid they will not fix it. I am willing to join a class action like one of the people on here has suggested. I bought this Camry brand new and all maintenance work has been done on this car at the dealer, no where else.
since purchased car is burning oil at the tune of about 1.7 liters per 4500 km,this makes it about 3.4 liters between oil changes (Toyota requires oil changes every 8000km) I don"t drive to much so my 6 months come up at approx 4500km when the oil change is due so if we multiply 1.7 liters by 2 since 1.7 liers gets used every 4500km the oil used every 8000km would amount to 3.4 liters of oil, enough to blow up the engine !!! so far the answer from Toyota Canada and the useless dealers "NADA" nothing just keep on doing the oil checks and we are all beautiful I paid almost $30000 for this lemon and of course Toyota is happy they got my money and I got the lemon !!!

After my first complaint on June 8th 2010 Toyota service adds 2 liters of oil. Then I have to go 4 times every 1000km for oil consumption check. Then Toyota service told me that this is OK as per Toyota specs. The engine has to burn more than 1 liter of oil per 1500km to be fixed under the warranty.
After this I was lucky to receive a survey, and then the next day the service manager called me and after our discussion he agrees to do another 4 oil consumption tests and finally after more than a year on August 25th 2011 Toyota service replaced engine block under the warranty.
My wife and I have owned 2 previously new Toyota Camrys and 2 other used Camrys starting with a 1986 year model, before we purchased our new 2009 LE 2.4L vehicle. The Owner's Manual states that it alright to burn 1.1 QT. of oil for every 600 miles of driving, which is unacceptable for the price of purchase and quality displayed for this manufacturer. Our last Camry purchased new was a 1994 LE 2.4L vehicle, and driven 234K miles without any oil consumption. This 2009 model, irregardless of a different 4 cylinder is not close to quality, and a great burden to the customers. Toyota is turning into Taskmasters for the customers, having to keep logs and carry excessive oil in driving, and taking the responsibility that is definitely Toyota's. Toyota wants to track and do homework at customer's time and expense, and Toyota should be responsible for vehicle such as this at their expense.
Update from Feb 28, 2012: Got a new engine Block after 1.5 years, and after careful logging and many trips to dealership with vehicle under warranty. Stay firm and polite while working with reps and service reps at dealership. Have them do everything in writing, and add the oil themselves whenever possible. Toyota headquarters will not deal directly with customer, as they have headquarter liaison at dealerships. Of course, the spec. For manual is extremely bogus and ignorant, but stick to the facts as I stated above.
