CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2009 Camry used to be adorned with our “Seal of Pretty Good†but that was before an alarming number of complaints started rolling in for excessive oil consumption.
Owners are being caught off-guard with how quickly their cars are running out of oil. No leaks, no spills, just 1 quart of vanishing oil in as little as 1,200 miles. Toyota maintains this is “normal†for the 2AZ-FE engine, even though they issued a TSB for the problem in August of 2011.

This is my stepdaughter's car (which me and my wife purchased for her two years ago). This particular year Camry is known for excessive oil consumption but Toyota didn't offer any recalls or repairs for it. My stepdaughter changed the oil regularly (every 3k miles) and checked the oil in between. She called me and said her car was making a strange clacking noise and then later in the day she was making a turn and the steering became really difficult (it shut off but she didn't realize it) and there was some smoke coming from under the hood. A good Samaritan towed her back to her apartment which was very close.
I had her check the oil after it was back and it there was just a little on the end of the dipstick but the check oil light did not come it. The light is working because it lights up when you first turn the car on. I had her add oil and after 2 quarts it was halfway up the hatch marks on the dipstick and then start it. It started and ran and sounded normal (we were on a video call) but there was a little smoke around the top of the engine (the valve cover gaskets needed to replaced so it had a little leak around the valve cover). She drove it to work the next day (20 minute drive in city traffic) and made it fine. I told her to take it to a shop she goes to after work. She was almost to the shop in a left turn lane to cross over a double lane road, the car shut off. More good Samaritans pushed it across the road into the shop parking lot.
They checked it out the next day and said the rings were burned out and didn't have much compression. Estimated cost to replace engine was $4,000-$5,000 which were not going to do on a 2009 with 199,000 miles. She was able to drive it back to her apartment complex (5 minute drive) and it made it fine. Now she's looking for a used but the used car market is very difficult right now, plus with inflation and the curb on lending, she hasn't been able to qualify for a car loan. Fortunately, her boyfriend and his family are very generous and kind people because they are willing to sell her his car (2015 Honda Civic) at a greatly discounted price but without a loan, she's going to have to come up with a personal payment deal with them.
My mom has had several Camry's and they have lasted years. My sister drive my mom's hand me down Camry's. I had a 1992 Camry in 2006 with 300,000+ miles and I drive it from Kentucky to New York City and back with no problems. Shame on Toyota for putting out a vehicle that is known for excessive oil consumption and then not owning up and making it right to vehicle owners.
