CarComplaints.com Notes: Owners are reporting that their engines are running out of oil awfully quick. As in, 1 quart every 1,200 miles. Toyota maintains that’s with the “normal†operating range of the 2AZ-FE while owners maintain that’s complete BS.
The issue may be the result of defective piston rings.

At times the exhaust would smoke when I started the car. Eventually it started smoking some while driving. I had it repaired and about 6 months later it started again when I would start the car. I always thought Toyota's were good cars because I had an Celica in 1978, got it for graduation never had a problem with it. I passed it on to my son when he turned 16 which was in 1993. When we sold it, it was still running. Now I have no confidence in Toyota's this car has given me nothing but headaches.
