CarComplaints.com Notes: An increasing number of Toyotas are experiencing excessive oil consumption and the 2007 Camry seems to be leading the charge.
Owners are reporting that their engines are deprived of oil halfway through their maintenance schedules and in some cases the damage is so bad that entirely new engines need to be installed, paid out of pocket. The issue may be a result of defective piston rings.
Toyota has issued a TSB for this problem, but maintains their stance that vehicles equipped with a 2AZ-FE engine are burning through a “normal†amount of oil.
I am the original owner of this car. Its been well maintained. Oil changes every 3,000 miles, Regular inspections when I lived in PA. Originally replaced the power steering in October, 2014. I had 47,000 miles at the time. Now I have 68,500 and lately when I have been turning the wheel it has been making a very odd squeak. Since I am going to head north in about two more weeks I wanted to have the car inspected before I left. I was hoping it was oil change, rotate tires, top off fluids, and now I get to replace this part again. Total $1265, I just feel Toyota no longer makes a quality product, I expected to have this car for 10 years without any huge expenses like this. I am really frustrated.
With Toyota's reputation for reliability, I was surprised (not pleasantly) to learn during a safety inspection at my Toyota dealer that I must shell out $2,600 to replace the power steering rack. My Camry has only 62,000 miles; mostly on the freeway. When I was led into the garage to view the leaky rack, I found the mechanic in the next bay hard at work replacing the power steering rack on another Toyota. Is there an epidemic?
