CarComplaints.com Notes: An increasing number of Toyotas are experiencing excessive oil consumption and the 2007 Camry seems to be leading the charge.

Owners are reporting that their engines are deprived of oil halfway through their maintenance schedules and in some cases the damage is so bad that entirely new engines need to be installed, paid out of pocket. The issue may be a result of defective piston rings.

Toyota has issued a TSB for this problem, but maintains their stance that vehicles equipped with a 2AZ-FE engine are burning through a “normal” amount of oil.

I am changing engine oil every time with not even 500 miles after changing the oil. I need to check everytime the level oil in the engine as the maintenance light is not turning on, that's very awful. I am not sure how much it will cost for repairs but it's costing too much every time to change the oil.

Burns oil/leaks oil constantly. I stay on top of it by paying my mechanic enough money to put his child through private university or buy a new boat, either way guessing that is better than having a car payment. I fully expect that at some point engine damage will be done and just performing regular oil changes and maintenance check-ups will not be enough. Holding my breath.

I had the car tested for excessive oil consumption in 2016 when it had about 65000 miles. Although it was burning some oil, the service manager said it was not excessive. In 2018, I have to ad 1.5 quarts of oil every 1000 miles. The dealership said the TSB expired at the end of 2016 and they would not fix it under the limitations of the TSB. I called Toyota corporate and they sounded sympathetic, but they were not willing to authorize the repairs.

2007 Toyota Camry is horrible. Bought it as a second owner at 40k from local dealer and car was running fine until I hit 60k, when I hit 60k the engine starting burning off a lot of oil. I have to add motor oil every 2 weeks and keep my eye out on the dipstick every other day because I do not want the engine to blow up on me!

I called the local Toyota and they advised that there was a 10 year/150k recall. I bought the car in 2014 and they advised me that they sent the EXTENDED WARRANTY ENGINE OIL BURNING FIX NOTICE to the FIRST OWNER!!!!! How is that my fault as the second owner? Now I'm stuck with a car that burns engine oil

Thanks a lot TOYOTA. I'm done with this crap and going back to HONDA

Car leaking oil. Every tank of gas used I'm putting in another 2 quarts of oil. Apparently was recalled but I had no idea there was even an issue with the oil until one day I just had none in my engine. It's been a known problem but yet Toyota won't fix it, why do I have to buy a new car because Toyota decided to sell cars with the wrong size piston rings. Toyota should stand behind their cars and fix the problem, not making the customer pay for their mistake. I'll never buy a Toyota after this. Stand behind your product and stop screwing over the customers.

My 2007 Camry starting burning a lot of oil. When I contacted Toyota, I was told that they were aware of some type of issue with the piston assembly, but that I was calling past the time they were honoring the repair process. How in the hell am was I supposed to know there was a piston assembly problem until my car starting burning oil like crazy? I also own a 2015 Camry but am now starting to question my choices.

Toyota should make owners aware of this problem so they know to check their oil in between oil changes. Toyota should also provide a fix. I will not buy another Toyota if they do not provide a fix for this problem.

2007 Camry documented oil changes. Scheduled maintenance done. About 2013 or later oil light came on. Got the recall or paper saying I could have it tested I did they said it was okay. Now I am burning one quart per tank of gas. 157000 miles. Drove my other Camrys to 300000 miles. No trade in don't want to sell it or trade it in to give someone else my problem. Extremely dissatisfied. This

Is our fourth Toyota. Our son and grandson work at Toyota in Georgetown. Thanks

Camry LE 4-2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 105,000 miles

This car was purchased new and serviced exclusively by Toyota, Marina del Rey, CA. When we alerted Toyota to the excessive oil consumption, they did not mention a design problem with this particular car. It was only when we had some unrelated work done by an independent mechanic that we were told of this design defect. While the car is still operable, the excessive oil burning will eventually clog the catalytic converter which would cost $1200 plus labor to replace. A rebuilt engine would be another $1700.

Camry LE 4-2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 105,000 miles

This car was purchased new and serviced only by Toyota (Marina del Rey). When we first reported the excessive oil consumption to Toyota, they never acknowledged a design defect. It was only when an independent repair service did some work on the car and alerted us to the design defect that we knew about it. While the car is still operable with the excessive oil consumption, it will eventually ruin the Catalytic Converter resulting in a $1200 replacement. The engine replacement will run about $1700.

Camry LE 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 33,000 miles

My 2007 Camry LE2.4 L has used excessive oil since I bought it in 2009. Went through the testing twice and dealer denied it qualified for the TSB repair. This put it passed the extended warranty coverage conveniently. With my personal mechanic, we ran our own test going to 1,500 miles and it burns 2 (two) quarts of oil in that span. Obviously it qualifies for the repair which was more than 1 quart in 1,200 miles but no more warranty for this obvious known defect. Toyota needs to permanently fix these with a recall.

Camry

Apparently there was a TSB issued in August 2011 re excessive oil usage as a result of piston design; we never heard about this until our latest service on the 9th of July 2018.

Estimated cost of repair was $4,400.00 which included: kit, hoses, clamps, pistons, piston pins.

A second opinion was obtained 07/13/2018 and they suggested a rebuilt engine or a used engine with a price of between $5,000 and $6,000
