CarComplaints.com Notes: An increasing number of Toyotas are experiencing excessive oil consumption and the 2007 Camry seems to be leading the charge.

Owners are reporting that their engines are deprived of oil halfway through their maintenance schedules and in some cases the damage is so bad that entirely new engines need to be installed, paid out of pocket. The issue may be a result of defective piston rings.

Toyota has issued a TSB for this problem, but maintains their stance that vehicles equipped with a 2AZ-FE engine are burning through a “normal” amount of oil.

So a failed water pump is not a big deal, it happens. It's a wear item and if it fails at 100K, 80K or even 60K miles it's not a big deal and I wouldn't complain. But when it happens at 5K miles something is wrong. That is what I found with my mother in laws car. I took it to the dealer to have the recalls done and to change the oil & filter, obviously not because of miles, but, because of time.

Anyway 5,145 miles and the water pump needs to be replaced, because it's leaking and pink crude build up from the pump on down. Estimate to replace is $660 -10% discount coupon.

Happened to see some pinkish stains on the underside of the hood while checking the oil prior to a trip. Quickly figured out that this was the red coolant, and that the stains were directly over the water pump. Took to dealer and complained; they covered it even though I was one month beyond my 36 month warranty.

I had a 72,000 mile extended warranty that expired in February 2014, the water pump failed after only 38,000, no water leakage or steam. the engine shut down while driving at 55 mph on the PA turnpike (wilkes-barre), thankfully we did not crash or get hit. Toyota refused any assistance

A water pump replacement at 75K miles, what a joke! The entire engine had to be pulled to replace the water pump that only cost a few hundred dollars, but the labor was ridiculous! I'll never own another Toyota, these cars have gone to HELL.

This is the 3rd major problem with my 2007 Toyota Camry, and once again Toyota needed to have issued a recall for Camry's water pumps or at least notified owners that if they have problem with the water pump that it is covered under the powertrain warranty. But once again, Toyota was hoping that owners would forget that the water pump is covered until 60,000 miles. I had the water pump replaced on my own dime only to find out that Toyota covers the water pumps until 60,000 miles. The struts Toyota replaces is covered for only one year, but the water pumps until 60,000 miles.

I'm done with Toyota.

Weekend trip to Milwaukee. 200 miles one way. 80 miles from home, a rattling noise started under the hood followed by a slapping sound. The temp gauge rose to hot and down to cold and up again. The water pump had failed(rattle), wrecking the serpentine belt(slapping) and the thermostat failed(temp fluctuations). A local tow and repair got us going to the tune of $620. Towing paid by our insurance company. The mechanic told us to take it to Toyota as the failing water pump tipped at an angle and gouged a chamber in the aluminum block and he wasn't sure whether it would be a problem in the future. This happened at 55,000 miles and the drivetrain is warranteed to 60,000 miles. Toyota was very helpful. Replaced the engine block, gave us a good loaner and motor warranty for another 60,000 miles. Now the complaint--- Toyota Experience--- their customer service has sent us a check for only $338. Our cost was $620. Their reason, get this, they don't want to pay for replacing the thermostat. The failing water pump had to have overheated the thermostat and causing it to fail. Not our fault. We want our $282.00. Also, we have a son and a daughter that are car shopping right now so shorting us that money will no doubt cost them two sales in the near future. Toyota Experience, bite the bullet, finish our claim and and gain sales by backing your product all the way. Case#1012082525 Give us a call.
