CarComplaints.com Notes: An increasing number of Toyotas are experiencing excessive oil consumption and the 2007 Camry seems to be leading the charge.
Owners are reporting that their engines are deprived of oil halfway through their maintenance schedules and in some cases the damage is so bad that entirely new engines need to be installed, paid out of pocket. The issue may be a result of defective piston rings.
Toyota has issued a TSB for this problem, but maintains their stance that vehicles equipped with a 2AZ-FE engine are burning through a “normal†amount of oil.
Mechanic thought it was a leaky compressor. However, diagnosing with dye is useless if it’s in the dashboard. It was a leaky AC evaporator coil. You must use leak Sniff detector.
In the end, during Christmas break I replaced the coil in dash, compressor, condenser at 190k miles (25 hrs worth 2.5k). The job is expensive because the whole dashboard needs to be removed. It could have been designed where you could get to the coil without removing the dash like other cars.
First they told my they put Freon in it as it was empty along with dye to see if it is leaking. Was told it could be up to a year before anything showed up as there was no sign of a leak when they ran diagnostics which cost 98.00 but the total cost was $225.00. Picked up car and air still did not work at all. Returned it same day and now they say the it is leaking in the evaporator which is under the "dash" (THANKS A LOT TOYOTA FOR THIS STUPID BUILD)! They have to remove the dash assembly and replace the A/C Evaporator and the "O" Rings and the Expansion Valve for a total of $1425.00 which means the total cost to fix this problem is $1650.00.
I could not wait to DUMP this car (planned on selling before the a/c issue) but now stuck with it as I cannot afford to sell it now and make any money off it to buy anything else.
Ac evaporator went bad with no warning. Vehicle is only 4 years old. Should have been some type of warning that AC was having a problem before it got this severe
