2000 Camry automatic transmission occasionally and randomly "slips" between first & second gear while od is on. Engine revs 5K to 6K RPM but no acceleration. Setting overdrive to "od off" re-engages transmission. Occurrences more frequent over the last two weeks. "check engine" light comes on Sept. 3rd, but is off again next day. After a $75 diagnosis, dealer explains the "check engine" code refers to a torque converter problem and points to a speed sensor malfunction. Replacement will be $120 for the part plus additional $70 for installation. Part is on order, to be installed upon arrival.
7/24/00 823 miles check engine light came on into shop replaced valve body. 9/1/00 3,177 miles check engine light to shop reset and returned.10/26/00 4,976 miles check engine light - to shop-reset and returned. 11/7/00 5,408 miles - engine check light - to shop-replaced transmission and torque converter. 4/17/01 13,320 miles check engine light - to shop -reset and returned. 4/30/01 14,624 miles check engine light - to shop - removed valve body-disassembled and cleaned, replaced torque converter and flushed transmission. The same code has come up every time P0770 -shift solenoid "E" malfunction.
Transmission leaking, service dept. Replaced the front transmission seal, six weeks later, fluid on the driveway again. Second repair the dealer replaced front seal again & the torque convertor.
